Evergreen

The leaf remembers when it was green
and the length of warmer days -
when it clung with ease to its twig
and glistened and flashed in the sun's bright rays.
Now it senses the fall
and the call of the forest floor.
It blushes red then pitted and brown
and soon it is no more.

How long is the life of every man
from bud to the hungry mud?
Joy and sorrow for a few short seasons
and then to the Judgement of God.
Ripped and tugged by Autumn breezes,
our evergreen hope is found solely in Jesus.
